The PDC World Darts Championship is the pinnacle of professional darts, the tournament every player on the circuit wants to win above all others.
Held every year over Christmas and New Year at Alexandra Palace in London, the World Championship is the most watched darts event in the calendar and the one that cements legacies.
Here is everything you need to know about the PDC World Darts Championship 2027 in our yearly Throw For 180 guide to the best darts tournament in the world.
When Is the PDC World Darts Championship 2027?
The PDC World Championship traditionally begins in mid-December and runs through to early January, with the final taking place on New Year’s Day.
The 2027 edition will follow this same format, running from December 2026 into January 2027 at its spiritual home, the Alexandra Palace, London.
Exact dates will be confirmed by the PDC World Darts Championship 2027 in due course.
Where Is It Held?
Alexandra Palace, affectionately known as Ally Pally, has hosted the PDC World Championship since 2008.
The iconic Victorian venue holds approximately 3,000 fans per session and creates one of the most electric atmospheres in British sport.
The Ally Pally crowd is legendary: fancy dress, singing, extraordinary noise, and a genuine sense of occasion that no other darts venue in the world matches.
For players, winning at Ally Pally is the ultimate achievement.
Who Will Be the Players to Watch in 2027?
The 2027 championship seedings will be determined by the PDC Order of Merit in November 2026, but based on the current landscape of the sport, here are the names to watch:
- Luke Littler — The current World Champion and World Number 1. At just 17, Littler became the youngest ever PDC World Champion in January 2025 and has continued to dominate. As defending champion heading into 2027, he will be the player everyone is targeting.
- Luke Humphries — The 2024 World Champion and MBE recipient. Cool Hand Luke is one of the most consistent players on the tour and always dangerous at Ally Pally. He recently won the World Cup of Darts with England, partnered with Littler.
- Michael van Gerwen — The three-time World Champion whose hunger for a fourth title never dims. MvG’s record at Alexandra Palace is formidable and he remains one of the most feared players in any draw.
- Gary Anderson — The two-time champion whose relaxed demeanour masks a fierce competitor. Anderson always performs well in the big stage environment.
- Gerwyn Price — The 2021 World Champion who brings intensity and powerful scoring to every match at Ally Pally.
- Dimitri Van den Bergh — A major finalist and consistent performer whose emotional, expressive style makes him a real threat in a long-format tournament.
How Does the Tournament Work?
The PDC World Championship uses a straightforward knockout format across multiple rounds:
- 96 players compete — 32 seeded Tour Card holders plus qualifiers from the PDC Challenge Tour, European Tour, and international qualifying events
- Matches are played in sets — early rounds are best of 3 or 5 sets, with later rounds extending to best of 7, 9, 11, and 13
- The final is the best of 13 sets — the most demanding format in the tournament
- Players must finish on a double (or bullseye) to win each leg
The tournament runs over approximately three weeks, with multiple sessions per day in the later rounds.
The electric atmosphere builds with every passing round, reaching a crescendo in early January when the final takes place in front of a packed, carnival-like Ally Pally crowd.
