Play Like the Pros – Match a Pro Darts Player Setup

Want to throw darts like your heroes?

Whether you’re inspired by Luke Littler’s fearless finishes, Michael van Gerwen’s power scoring, or Luke Humphries’ clinical precision, this page is your starting point for understanding exactly what the world’s best players use and how you can take inspiration from their setups for your own game.

What Makes a Pro Darts Setup Different?

Watch any professional darts player and you’ll notice they all look slightly different at the oche. Different grips, different stances, different release points. But look closer at the equipment and the differences become even more interesting.

Professional players are incredibly particular about their gear. The weight of a barrel can affect trajectory and control. The shape of a flight determines how the dart travels through the air. The length of a stem influences the angle at which the dart sits in the board. Every tiny detail adds up.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the key components that make up a pro darts setup:

Barrels — the main body of the dart, usually made from tungsten. Heavier barrels (24g–26g) tend to suit players with a stronger, more direct throw. Lighter barrels (18g–22g) suit a softer, more guided release. Most pros sit somewhere between 20g and 26g.

Flights — the fins at the back that stabilise the dart in flight. Standard flights offer more drag and stability, slim flights cut through the air faster and suit tighter groupings. Many pros use slim or kite-shaped flights depending on their throwing speed.

Stems (Shafts) — connect the barrel to the flight. Shorter stems produce a flatter trajectory, longer stems create more of an arc. Pro players often experiment extensively with stem length before settling on what feels right.

Grip — not a component you buy, but arguably the most important factor of all. How a pro holds their dart is as unique as a fingerprint, and studying their grip can give you real insight into how to develop your own.

Step Into Their Shoes — or Stance

One of the most effective ways to improve your own darts game is to study what the best players in the world actually do. Not to copy them blindly, but to understand the logic behind their choices and follow the players tips you pick up.

If you struggle with grouping, look at how a player like Gerwyn Price sets up his stance and lines up his eye with the target. If your darts are flying too high or dropping short, compare your stem and flight combo to someone with a similar throwing speed. If you keep bouncing out, check the barrel grip texture of players who rarely miss.

The pros have spent thousands of hours finding what works for them. You can shortcut a lot of that trial and error simply by understanding their choices and testing what translates to your own throw.

Which Pro Player Are You Most Like?

Not every pro setup will suit every player and that’s the point. Before you rush out and buy the same darts as your favourite player, it’s worth thinking about which pro’s style actually matches your own.

Ask yourself these questions:

Do you throw with power and pace, or is your release slow and guided? Power throwers tend to get on better with heavier barrels and slim flights. If your throw is more measured, a mid-weight barrel with a standard flight might suit you better.

Do you prefer a front-weighted or rear-weighted grip? Front-weighted players often favour barrels with more grip texture at the front, while rear-weighted throwers prefer a smoother barrel with grip towards the back.

Are you a straight thrower or do your darts arc through the air? Straight throwers generally use shorter stems, arcing throwers benefit from longer stems that allow the dart to stabilise on the way down.

Once you have a sense of your own style, browse the player profiles below and look for a pro whose throwing mechanics sound similar. Their setup is likely a reasonable starting point for your own experimentation.
